Microsoft’s Windows 8 which was released in 2012 is one of the most hated operating systems till date mostly because of the huge expectations Microsoft slammed on it.

Microsoft wanted it to fill the gap between tablets and laptops but unfortunately, it fell short of expectations and naturally, the world exaggerated the flaws and totally pushed aside the fact that it was still a fully functional operating system.

All versions of Windows normally get at least 10 years of support before Microsoft gives up on them. Windows 8 is an exception as Microsoft is cutting all ties to the OS after just 3 years of it circulating in the market. The main reason Microsoft is killing it is because of the overwhelming negative feedback users reported on the OS. After Microsoft pushes the last update batch to it on January 12, Microsoft will have officially stopped supporting the doomed OS.

Microsoft released this statement about the decision to end Windows 8:

END OF SUPPORT REFERS TO THE DATE WHEN MICROSOFT NO LONGER PROVIDES AUTOMATIC FIXES, UPDATES, OR ONLINE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE. THIS IS THE TIME TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE LATEST AVAILABLE UPDATE OR SERVICE PACK INSTALLED. WITHOUT MICROSOFT SUPPORT, YOU WILL NO LONGER RECEIVE SECURITY UPDATES THAT CAN HELP PROTECT YOUR PC FROM HARMFUL VIRUSES, SPYWARE, AND OTHER MALICIOUS SOFTWARE THAT CAN STEAL YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION.

When Windows 8.1 was released, Microsoft treated it like a service pack to Windows 8 instead of another version of the OS. This means that all Windows 8 users are expected to upgrade to Windows 8.1 so as to benefit from the extended support.

By January 13 2016, support to it will have ended and anybody still on the OS will have to pay the full price to upgrade to Windows 10 which thankfully will still be free to Windows 8.1 users.

The team at MyTechNg strongly advices you to upgrade to Windows 10 before support to Windows 8 is officially ended as there are a lot of advantages of Windows 10 over any other version of Windows.
